Paper Sampler

Photos:

Designs in Template:
Semester 2 Project: The brief was to create a perfect colour mock-up of a paper sampler using KW Doggett's samplers as a guide. My Lab teacher being a practicing Graphic Designer with her own business receives these Paper Samplers on a regular basis that come in select kits. We needed to base our designs on an artist, illustrator or designer whose work we admire. I chose more of a culture or art period rather than any particular person. My inspiration was Japan and Japanese art, derived mainly from the Edo period. Using Illustrator and In Design we were to create a template based on the KW Doggett samplers and collect paper samples accordingly.

Ad Busters

Semester 2 Project: The brief was to subtly manipulate a print ad ala Ad Busters (https://www.adbusters.org)
Can you guess what I am commenting on here?

This is the orignal ad:

Magazine Illustrations

Semester 2 Project: the brief was to design 2 magazine illustrations based on research we were allocated by the teacher. We were put into teams of 3 or 4 and each person had to research a different topic. We then had to present our research to each other and the teacher. Based on the research we chose which one to illustrate (other than our own). My research topic was Believe Me, based on religion and I chose to illustrate an article on artificial limbs. The objective was for the illustration to reference the article just by looking at it. That it leant some kind of meaning without having to read the article itself. The copy itself did not need to make sense. They were created in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign using vector, and photography.

Colour Theory Poster

Semester 2 Project: The brief was to create a poster showing tertiary colour theory. We had to pick 3 or 4 colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel. I took photos of broken up bits of chocolate (which was a lot of fun I can tell you as well as extremely tempting!) I represented the blue/green sector of the colour wheel and I did this by manipulating the hue and saturation of all the "goo" that is coming out of the chocolate (which was caramel btw :P~~~). The poster had to include type.
A booklet was to accompany the poster. The booklet needed to follow the same design idea as the poster and represent Primary, Secondary and other Tertiary colours.

Book Jackets

Semester 2 Project: Based on a Twentieth Century Architects series of books. The brief was to create 2 out of the series using the same grid layout that would be used for the entire series.

Brian Eno Another Green World

6 sided Digi-pak.
Semester 2 Project: Brief was to create 3 CD designs with the goal of producing your most successful design. I decided to challenge myself with creating a digi-pak as opposed to merely placing some paper in a jewel case (not that there is anything wrong with that!!). The designs were based on Brian Eno's album 'Another Green World'. The one above was made into the end product. It was created in Photoshop.
The below 2 designs were the not as resolved as I would have liked:

Animated Painting

Semester 2 Project: We had to create a 10-20 second Flash animation using only shape tweens. The premise was to animate a painting by an abstract Expressionist painter (boy they really seem to love these artists!). It also had to be set to music. The music I chose is 'Mandylion' by The Gathering.

Milk Cartons

Semester 2 Project: Basically the brief was to design a funky, new milk carton (the ones in Australia are so boring!). We had to represent all sizes (1 litre, 600 & 300mls) and we had to include all the necessary jargon that is required to go on a milk carton such as nutritional information etc. Template was created by simply cutting open a milk carton and measuring it up. It was all created in Illustrator. I was kinda going for a funky, Tim Burton-esque farm feel :D
Think in 3D people!

Colour and I are One

Semester 1 Project: The brief was to to create 4 100mm x 100mm cards based on 4 small articles about colour provided by the teacher and only using certain colours for each card. I worked mainly in Illustrator for this, using vector brushes and photographs then transferring it all into InDesign for Text Layout.

Cold Field/ Hard Colour Brochure

Semester 1 Project: The Brief was to create a brochure for an exhibition based on Abstract Expressionist artists, that would not only work as a brochure but also as a poster. The title page is supposed to be at the bottom of the poster but on the front of the brochure...if that makes sense.

Carry Bags

Semester 1 Project: The brief was to design 3 carry bags with the objective to produce one of the designs. We had to choose from 3 categories, Pharmaceutical, Fashion & Skate Culture. As you can probably tell, I chose fashion. We had to take a well known logo and design accordingly. The design that was eventually made into a carry bag was the middle one. All are very time-consuming vectors made in Illustrator, mostly from photographs. I really, really want those shoes though...haha

Type Walk

Semester 1 Project: Swinburne University is located on prominent shopping district Chapel Street in Melbourne. The brief was to take a walk with your trusty camera in the immediate location and take photos of Type that appeals to you, concentrating on a theme. You were to choose 20 or so images to collate into a book that was organised in InDesign. My "theme" was the prospect of being able to shop for anything. Using the typography I tried to relate it to an object, emotion, random name, action etc in an abstract manner. Sometimes it made sense, sometimes it didn't (just like me really). I placed the names on prices tags to flow with the whole shopping thing I had going. The photos were taken with my Pentax K10 DSLR. I have chosen a few of my favourites to show you.

Self Portrait

Semester 1 Project: One of my first dalliances with Illustrator vectoring. The brief was to take a photo of yourself, could just be a headshot, or a full body portait and vector it using only the pen tool. Not knowing exactly how much work vectoring can be and how time consuming it is, I went for the full body shot. Although it was difficult I am quite pleased with how it turned out and I definitely learnt a lot about the pen tool! We had to place the portrait into a template with some lyrics or a poem or something to go with it.
